ProVideo Coalition (PVC) was launched in February 2008, and we appreciate the positive response we’ve received from our fellow video professionals. Now that it’s February 2009 (where has the time gone?), we are launching a line of newsletters: PVC Pipeline, which will contain original articles written by PVC authors. Subscribers receive advance access to these articles before they appear on the rest of the PVC website. Subscriptions are free; just click on the link in the upper right corner of each page, or here: SUBSCRIBE

The first newsletter - PVC Production Pipeline - will be released in a few days, and covers the subjects of cameras, lights, editing, and other production-related matters. The first issue is evenly divided between reviews and techniques pieces, including:

  • Adam Wilt reviewing the Sony HDW-650F HDCAM Camcorder
  • Steve Hullfish reviewing the Adobe live-capture application OnLocation CS4
  • Allan Tépper reviewing the video production live command center BoinxTV
  • Bruce Johnson sharing how to build a lighting kit out pieces available at any home center or lumberyard
  • Kendal Miller illustrating how to take advantage of depth cues when compositing your shots
  • Art Adams explaining what that innocuous “gain” control actually does, and how to best employ it

The second PVC Pipeline newsletter - due around the first of March - will cover the area of post-production, while we’re still cooking up which subjects to cover in our third newsletter (suggestions welcome!). So make sure you subscribe, and then keep your eyes on your email inbox for the first edition of PVC Pipeline.

NAB 2012: Trucolor Ohm Space Light

Bruce A Johnson | 04/20

400 watts of LED replaces a 6K?  Sounds good to me.

Next time you need to flood a room with soft light - in whatever color temperature - you should give the Ohm a look.

NAB 2012: EZ-Jib

Bruce A Johnson | 04/20

EZ to use, EZ on your wallet

I’ve always been intrigued by jib arms, and usually put off by their high prices.  EZ-FX might have a solution to that problem.

NAB 2012: Profoto Reflector Umbrellas

Bruce A Johnson | 04/18

The big one in the picture is TEN FEET TALL!

When I walked past these the first time, I thought they might be antennas left on the Moon to shoot signals back to earth.  But a little research proved to me that these are great lighting devices.  NOTE: a big “Thanks!” to my colleague Erik Higgs for letting me edit on his laptop while I was in Vegas.

NAB 2012:  Eizo 4K Monitor

Bruce A Johnson | 04/18

You are going to have to look at your 4K footage on *something.*

At NAB 2012, when you see a crowd of people clotted around a small booth, it’s a sign you should pay attention.  The Eizo full 4K monitor I found there was easily one of the most beautiful I saw all week, with a price tag to match.  Also:  A belated “Thanks!” to my colleague Erik Higgs for letting me edit on his laptop while in Vegas.
