RED Booth with Ted
Scott Gentry | 04/15
A sort of behind the scenes tour.
RED Booth at NAB from ProVideo Coalition on Vimeo.
Ted realized most of PVC’s readership has probably already seen heaps of Epic, Scarlet and more form the RED booth. This part 1 of 2 series takes a look at some other really cool tech that RED was displaying at NAB. From RED in 3D, to iPad control of Epic and more.
Running time: a little over 12 mins. But oh so worth every second.
FTC Disclaimer: I attended NAB on my own (PVC) dime and covered the show extensively all four days. Sony supplied NXCAM cameras to PVC so we can cover the event. Other than that, PVC received no product or renumeration.

A few cool things I saw at the show that didn’t fit into any other articles.
NAB is too big a show in too short a time to see more than a fraction of it. I’ve covered a few things in some depth (as have other PVC folks), but there’s plenty more that slips by without proper coverage. Here, I have a few photos…

RED makes some interesting products and they deserve some credit for reinvigorating the digital cinema market that had stalled, but for Pete’s sake, can they turn down their bombastic marketing machine to 10?
Listening to a RED sales pitch is akin to being trapped next to an 8 year old on a transpacific flight, who’s hopped up on three quarts of chocolate milk.
We get it. You make some very nice gear and we like you. Really. We like you, now calm down and please ship Scarlet.

I think Harry has a point. Let me quote someone who was at NAB regarding the RED experience:
__________________________________________________
“I was disappointed because I thought I was going to be introduced to “Red Experience”.
I wanted to HOLD a Scarlet and touch its LCD screen. I wanted to see how the Redmote worked off camera, and feel how heavy the camera was in my hands. I wanted a live demonstration of the camera’s HDR-X, features, and a live demonstration of grading techniques and tips. I wanted to see someone Editing and Grading native footage that was JUST SHOT, complete with instant cropping into the footage for closeups to simulate an A-cam B-Cam setup. I wanted to see for myself what these cameras could do that I can’t do elsewhere. I wanted to see a Birger mount allowing Canon EF lenses on the Red cameras.
I came on an airplane to NAB to experience things in person. If I want to look at a camera from a distance, I’ll find that on youtube. Trade shows are about being there, touching buttons, and exploring interfaces - and finding those things that one can only figure out in person. ”
