This is the first of 24 weekly color correction video tutorials from the revised edition (due in December) of “Color Correction for Video” which was the first color correction book ever published at the time. This tutorial is pretty basic and others are quite advanced. I’ll try to release them in an order that builds on concepts from previous tutorials. Many of the tutorials will be based on Color, but others utilize Final Cut Pro, Avid and Color Finesse (as a plug-in for Adobe After Effects or Premiere). There may be some gaps in the information, since the video tutorials were designed to be viewed in conjunction with the book. hi, i have bought in amazon the wonderful book the art & technique of digital color correction by Steve Hullfish, i cannot play some of the .mov videos of the dvd, the ones that seem to be in a different codec, which codec is needed to view them? i can view about half of the videos ok , but the other half that seem to be compressed with a different codec i cannot view them, a codec seems to be missing in my computer, could anybody help me telling me what codec i need to get to view his videos, examples of videos i cannot see are : Ghosts_basement.mov, Kiss.mov, ChromaDuMonde_properexcool.mov, grayscale_warm, piano_cool and others, thanks very much for any info, best, Javier Ideami, email: , http://www.ideami.com

by the way his book is the best book in color correction i have ever seen, wonderful, thanks for any help about the videos, i can see some of them like brian_overexposed.mov or the ones of the art institute, but i cannot view any of those written above and others, its clear that a codec is missing in my computer but i cant find which one, i installed Divx codec as well but nothing, thanks a lot, email: , Javier

I read in utmost delight Steve’s latest & splendid book “The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction”. It is written in a no-nonsense, considerate, approachable style that is a tribute to the reader’s intelligence. I particularly appreciated the high-level focus on software-agnostic skills, which truly allows me to reuse them on other software than those demonstrated in the book.
Now, about this new revision of “Color Correction for Video”, should I understand that this other book will be more focusing on the nuts & bolts of specific CC tools?
To ideami: I too had problems with the DVD, I believe it was made on a Mac, so there may be things that don’t get through very well on Quicktime on Windows.

Hi guys
I am horribly embarrassed to admit that there is a problem with the codecs of the High Definition QT files on the DVD for the “Art” book. They are DVCProHD codec Quicktimes. Basically you can only read these files if you have FCP6 installed. There are a couple other programs that also read them. I thought they were much more universal when I used them.
The good news is that I uploaded new files to my publisher’s website and you can download the HD files from them for free. I am SO SORRY for the inconvenience that this caused for all of the non-FCP folks. My goal in writing the book was to provide a reference that was completely cross-platform and cross-product.

Here is the breakdown of the books:
“The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction” has some basic color correction information for the beginner, but the “meat” of the book is that 12 top colorists from around the world color correct the same images and the reader can follow along and learn “at the feet of the masters.”
“Color Correction for Video” is a revised edition of “Color Correction for Digital Video” which I wrote in 2002 with Jaime Fowler. The revised edition is COMPLETELY re-written. It is focused a little more at the beginner, but definitely walks users all the way through some pretty in-depth corrections like “creating cool looks” and “matching shots.” This book is also completely platform and product agnostic, so anybody on any computer (or even the dedicated hardware color correction solutions) can learn from it. There are many step-by-step instructions using various pieces of software including Color, FCP, Avid, and Adobe Premiere and After Effects using Color Finesse. So you DO get the nuts and bolts and you should still be able to follow along with the Avid demo (for example) if you only have Premiere.

Here is the URL. The strange thing is that appears to re-direct to the home page.
