Scott Simmons

Scott Simmons was born in rural West Tennessee and didn't really realize that movies and tv had to be made by actual people until he went to college. After getting degrees in both Television Production and Graphic Design he was in one of the early graduating classes at the Watkins Film School in Nashville, Tennessee. During that time at Watkins he discovered editing. While most of his classmates in film school wanted to be directors, Scott saw real career opportunities in post production and took a job as an assistant editor after completing film school. In 1999, Scott took the leap into freelancing and in 2007 accepted a position as an editor at Filmworkers - Nashville. In 2005 Scott created The Editblog a website dedicated to all things editing and post-production which is now housed here at PVC. Someday he hopes to edit on a beach with a touch screen device, a wireless hard drive and a Red Stripe.

Quicktips 2011 Day 13: Overwrite bin column layout upon changes

February 13, 2011 - I change my column headings all the time and overwrite the old ones

image

My editing user settings are constantly evolving. One things that changes a lot are the bin column layouts that I recall for various editing tasks. I use many different columns for both Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro. I very often resize columns and add or remove headings to saved layouts. Rather than always save a new heading or repeatedly change the same saved layout over and over I will save and overwrite an existing column layout.

Quicktips 2011 Day 12: Dupe detection in Avid, FCP and kinda in Premiere Pro but not really

February 10, 2011 - showing duplicate frames / clips used in an edit is a super handy function

image

Dupe detection is one of those great little features that you don’t have to have in your editing application but it certainly makes tracking used footage in an edit much easier. For those unfamiliar, dupe detection tracks footage used in an edit and identifies duplicate shots in the timeline with colored lines in the clip. I did a post about Final Cut Pro’s dupe detection and DSLR footage a while back but this Quicktip looks at it again and Avid Media Composer as well. And while Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 doesn’t have dupe detection it can show you what clips have been used.

Quicktips 2011 Day 10: Map Media Composer keyboard arrows to FF and REW

February 10, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip can speed along Avid Media Composer navigation

image

This Reader Quicktip is from Jack Jones,  a colorist (or colourist I guess I should say) working out of London who passes along a simple but handy Quicktip for Avid Media Composer. It involves remapping the up and down arrow keys on a keyboard. This matches a Final Cut Pro behavior but it is more useful as a default Media Composer keyboard configuration for the up and down arrows keys IMHO. I’ve done the same thing for as long as I can remember.

Quicktips 2011 Day 06: The mappable Avid Smart Tool button

There’s a single button in Media Composer 5 that can disable and enable the Smart Tool

image

Love it or hate it, the Avid Smart Tool that was introduced in Media Composer 5 is here to stay. It will continue to be refined and hopefully evolve as the software evolves but it’s worth noting there is a single, mappable button that can toggle the Smart Tool on and off.

Quicktips 2011 Day 05: Change Sequence Timecode in Media Composer 5

Avid moved the change sequence timecode command in MC 5 and didn’t tell us

image

Prior to Avid Media Composer 5.0 if you wanted to change the sequence timecode of an edit you hit the key stroke command + I while in the Record window and up popped a dialog box where that could be changed. Now in 5.0 command + I opens an info window with sequence details. But the ability to change Sequence timecode is still there.

28 Days of Quicktips Coming Again for 2011 + reader Quicktips

The best of those reader Quicktips can pick a free book

image

February 1 UPDATE:  KPL Production Services has added their timecode calculators for iOS devices to the reader submitted Quicktips prize list.

Way back in the year 2009 when I started this channel on PVC I published the 28 Days of Quicktips. It was exactly what the title says, one Quicktip a day for the entire month of February that usually pertained to either Final Cut Pro or Avid Media Composer. It’s now 2011 and February is almost upon us so I thought I’d do it again for 2011. One tip a day for the entire month. FCP, Avid and maybe a few for Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.

This year we’re also looking for user submitted Quicktips this time as well. Just send us your favorite short Quicktip and an accompanying image or two that helps illustrate the tip and we’ll try to publish those as well. And as an incentive to send us your own Quicktips I will choose what I personally judge to be the best submission and send them a free book. Details below.

PluralEyes for Avid Media Composer ships and syncs for you

The must-own auto syncing software originally for Final Cut Pro comes to Avid

image

Singular Software made the announcement just the other day that their flagship product PluralEyes has been released for Avid Media Composer. As we all know PluralEyes is automagic software that “listens” to the audio of clips in an edit timeline and then attempts to automatically sync them. I say attempts but I’ve had great luck with it syncing some very difficult things and the Avid version seems to work quite well. PluralEyes for Media Composer is on sale for $119 until February 21.

QuickTip: The clip custom color picker is there in Media Composer 5

Avid did change the clip Set Color option but the old one is there too.

image

Avid released Media Composer 5 to some big changes and one of those changes that wasn’t so big (but did cause some discussion and frustration amongst longtime users) was exactly how you are able to change the color of clips in a bin. Media Composer has a very nice option where you can select clips in a bin, change the color of those clips and then the timeline can reflect the colors of those clips in a very bright way. I use this all the time to color different types of clips (interviews, b-roll, audio, specific takes) for easy identification when looking at a timeline. Before version 5 you could pick a custom color but with version 5 that changed. The custom color picker is hidden.

LIGHTING: Advanced Cucoloris Use Illustrated by a Solar Eclipse

Art Adams | 05/24- 11:24 AM

Q: What happens when you stack several pattern-making devices in front of a light? A: Extreme lighting goodness. Learn why here…

I love stacking cucolorii (plural of “cucoloris”) and I thought it was time to write an article about how this technique works and why I like it so much. I was a bit stretched for ideas that would illustrate this concept… and then an eclipse happened. Why that made a difference is a very interesting story…
