Scott Simmons

Scott Simmons was born in rural West Tennessee and didn't really realize that movies and tv had to be made by actual people until he went to college. After getting degrees in both Television Production and Graphic Design he was in one of the early graduating classes at the Watkins Film School in Nashville, Tennessee. During that time at Watkins he discovered editing. While most of his classmates in film school wanted to be directors, Scott saw real career opportunities in post production and took a job as an assistant editor after completing film school. In 1999, Scott took the leap into freelancing and in 2007 accepted a position as an editor at Filmworkers - Nashville. In 2005 Scott created The Editblog a website dedicated to all things editing and post-production which is now housed here at PVC. Someday he hopes to edit on a beach with a touch screen device, a wireless hard drive and a Red Stripe.

Final Cut Pro X Multicam Editing webinar now available on-demand

Plus a little screencast in this blog post on a topic we didn’t get to cover.

image

I had great fun last week presenting the Final Cut Pro X multicam editing webinar for Moviola Filmmaking Webinars. It was a lightning fast 90 minutes and we covered a lot of ground but we didn’t get through everything I wanted to cover. The On-Demand version can be purchased and I recorded an extra screencast about one topic that I didn’t get to cover in the webinar. Check it out after the jump.

Update Alert: Magic Bullet Suite 11.2

Avid Media Composer 6 support for Magic Bullet Looks is the big highlight

image

Red Giant Software must have been doing some work over the holidays (that or they’ve had a busy 2012 thus far) as just over week ago we saw an update to Magic Bullet Suite. Beside offering full Mac OS X Lion compatibility the big news is that Magic Bullet Looks now runs in Avid Media Composer 6.

Update Alert: FxFactory 3.0

A solid update to the popular plug-in tool brings new effects, new development partners including Nattress

A big update just hit the Final Cut Pro / Adobe After Effects world this week with Noise Industries FxFactory 3. This update to the popular plug-in architecture introduces not just a lot of new effects but a new interface to the actual FxFactory program. This release sees an interesting new color correction tool from Yanobox and the first FxFactory tools from Nattress and an FCPX only transition package from idustrial revolution.

100 Final Cut Pro X Questions Answered

These are questions asked before, during and after recent FCPX webinar

image

Recently I hosted a Final Cut Pro X Hands On Tour webinar for FilmmakingWebinars.com. It was a great event with 90 minutes of FCPX for over 800 people attending. (An archive of that can be purchased btw). People often ask questions before, during and after the webinar. Here’s 101 of them that were asked, answered to the best of my knowledge.

Update Alert! Pro Maintenance Tools

Digital Rebellion has made a recent move to support other NLEs besides Final Cut Pro.

image

If you been a Final Cut Pro users for any real length of time you’ve probably heard of FCS Maintenance Pack, that was a suite of tools from Digital Rebellion to help diagnose and fix Final Cut Studio issues. Recently Digital Rebellion has been making their tools less FCP centric (and the FCPX update probably accelerated that) and have done away with FCS Maintenance Pack and have replaced it with Pro Maintenance Tools.

My burning questions about Final Cut Pro X

If rumors are right they may be answered next week.

image

As we sit what might be less than a week out from Final Cut Pro X’s release (if the rumors hold true) there’s been a new firestorm of controversy that erupted after fcp.co posted some YouTube videos from a recent LAFCPUG meeting where FCP guru/trainer made this statement about FCPX 1.0: “It will not be ready for professional use.” And he has since followed up on that comment. Comments should always be taking in context. With the context of what I have seen about FCPX here are the questions that I will answer first when I download my copy.

Update Alert! Apple ProKit 7.0

A few fixes for FCP, Motion, Soundtrack and Logic

image

Yesterday Apple pushed out a Pro Applications update in the form of ProKit 7.0 for Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and later. It doesn’t look to be anything more than some minor issues with FCP, Motion, Soundtrack Pro and the Logic apps. This one: “Fixes leaks and improves stability for the color picker and timecode interface in Final Cut Pro and Motion” intrigues me a bit. I installed yesterday and so far all seems well. It’s available from the above link or via Software Update.

FCP X is shown to the world. Flashy things are seen, questions are asked

As cool as the demo was we are left with many more questions than answers.

All the Final Cut Pro hype culminated tonight we some 1700 people filed into the Bally’s Event center for the 2011 SuperMeet to get a sneak preview of the next Final Cut Pro. Once the people were seated and the music stopped we saw a slick presentation of a greatly redesigned application. New features abound but in the end I was left with a lot more questions than answers.

LIGHTING: Advanced Cucoloris Use Illustrated by a Solar Eclipse

Art Adams | 05/24- 11:24 AM

Q: What happens when you stack several pattern-making devices in front of a light? A: Extreme lighting goodness. Learn why here…

I love stacking cucolorii (plural of “cucoloris”) and I thought it was time to write an article about how this technique works and why I like it so much. I was a bit stretched for ideas that would illustrate this concept… and then an eclipse happened. Why that made a difference is a very interesting story…
