All of the 2011 28 Days of Quicktips quicktips all in one place

Scott Simmons | 03/04

We really ended up with 31 thanks to the great Reader Submitted Quicktips

February 2011 has come and gone and with the onset of March, the 2011 edition of the Editblog’s 28 Days of Quicktips has come to a close. We first did this in 2009 and with all the positive feedback I received back then I thought we’d try it again for 2011, with a twist. This time we were asking for Reader Quicktips as well and we received quite a few good ones. As a bonus, I thought I’d pick the best Reader Submitted Quicktip and give the creator of that Quicktip their choice of a book. Read on to see the winner winners.

Here are links to all of the 28 31 tips from the 2011 28 Days of Quicktips.

Day 01: Apply multiple FCP bin comments at once.

February 1, 2011 - right + click to apply multiple comments to clips at once in FCP bin

Day 02: Manifesto title tool can spell check.

February 2, 2011 - The recent free FxFactory title update includes a title tool that can spell check

Day 03: Scrub the FCP thumbnail column thumb

February 3, 2011 - You can scrub the thumbnail displayed in the FCP thumbnail column

Day 04: Save a comment specific column layout in FCP

February 4, 2011 - I like to save a specific bin column layout for comments only and then edit to my liking

Day 05: Change Sequence Timecode in Media Composer 5

Avid moved the change sequence timecode command in MC 5 and didn’t tell us

Day 06: The mappable Avid Smart Tool button

There’s a single button in Media Composer 5 that can disable and enable the Smart Tool

Day 07: changing FCP filters lengths partially applied to a clip

February 7, 2011 - Moving and extending the length of a filter applied to only part of a clip is a powerful feature

Day 08: Add and Edit markers in FCP 7 for speed

February 8, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip was an addition to the FCP 7 update and one of the best

Day 09: A bunch of FCP tips from Digital Rebellion

February 9, 2011 - These are some oldies but goodies

Day 10: Map Media Composer keyboard arrows to FF and REW

February 10, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip can speed along Avid Media Composer navigation

Day 11: Playhead of your timeline to match FCP edit to tape In point

February 11, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip isn’t for everyone but if editing to tape it is a very good one

Not everyone has to perform edits to tape these days but if you do then I think the Day 11 tip is a great one to have for Final Cut Pro. Ben Scott’s tip saves a bit of time when setting up FCP to perform an insert edit to tape. This tip was one of my favorites. Ben gets a book and the iOS software.

Day 12: Dupe detection in Avid, FCP and kinda in Premiere Pro but not really

February 10, 2011 - showing duplicate frames / clips used in an edit is a super handy function

Day 13: Overwrite bin column layout upon changes

February 13, 2011 - I change my column headings all the time and overwrite the old ones

Day 14: Better performance for .motn files in FCP Timeline

February 14, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip is for all those that use Motion projects in FCP

Day 15: Create audio synced subclips from overcranked footage

February 15, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip might be especially helpful for the music video people

Day 16: Restore Default Patch in Avid Media Composer

February 16, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip is a one click option when editing from a sequence in the Source monitor

This Avid Media Composer Quicktip from Josh Petok is really just a simple reminder of an Avid function but I have to admit that it’s one that I often forget about. In fact I had found myself, just a few days before he sent in this tip, manually patching a sequence to edit from Avid’s Source to Record. The instant I saw this tip I was reminded that there was an easier way. Josh gets a book too.

Day 17: Using extended markers to create subsclips

February 17, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip explores FCP’s extended markers and making subclips from them

Day 18: Two FCP tips for today’s Quicktip

February 18, 2011 - There’s 2 Reader Quicktips here, timeline preferences and preferred effects

Day 19: Rename your Avid MXF folders

February 19, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip can help with the organization of your Avid media folders

Day 20: One of the most simple, handy Quicktips ever

February 20, 2011 - This Quicktip is so simple, yet so brilliant and can be utilized by most anyone

Day 21: Change multiple FCP audio clip levels at once

February 21, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip is an option for changing levels and parameters for multiple FCP audio clips

Day22: Add Virtual Cuts to Avid Clip Based on Tracks Beneath

February 22, 2011 - This Reader Quicktip could be a real Avid Media Composer timesaver

Day 23: moving all keyframes on a shot in FCP

February 23, 2011 - If you’ve keyframed a shot in FCP you can move all the keyframes at once in the FCP timeline

Day 24: Access FCP’s timeline keyframe editor

February 24, 2011 - You can animate and keyframe filters and motion parameters right in the FCP timeline

Day 25: Two Avid tips for Friday

February 25, 2011 - These Reader Quicktips are great for the advanced Media Composer user

Day 26: Use a zero in front of a number for better sorting

February 26, 2011 - Putting a zero in front of single digit numbers sorts them properly

Day 27: Speed up FCP’s XDCAM export

February 27, 2011 - Conforming XDCAM can take a while but this tips speeds it up

Day 28: Playback Media Composer clips via thumbnails

February 28, 2011 - When in Frame view in an Avid bin you can playback the thumbnails

Day 29: Unlocking bins in Avid Unity

February 29, 2011 - Here’s a tip for dealing with locked bins when working in Avid Unity

Day 30 follow-up for the Day 27 Speed up FCP’s XDCAM export

Further tests from this Reader Quicktip shows there might be more to this than originally posted

Day 31: Using the FCP Change Speed Segment

March 3, 2011 - This little known FCP speed tool can help with clip speed manipulation
