Quicktips 2011 Day 03: Scrub the FCP thumbnail column thumb

Scott Simmons | 02/03

February 3, 2011 - You can scrub the thumbnail displayed in the FCP thumbnail column

There’s a thumbnail column with the Final Cut Pro browser. Call that column up and you can then scrub the thumbnail right in the Browser column.

First you have to be sure you are displaying the Thumbnail column in a FCP browser bin. Right + click on a column heading and choose the Show Thumbnail option:

Once that is selected there will be a tiny thumbnail for each clip. It’s small but it’s actually big enough to get an idea of what might be in a clip. To scrub you just click and drag the mouse pointer:

This can be a very quick way of refreshing your memory as to what’s in a particular clip or possibly looking for a particular object in a clip. That is if that object is big enough to find in the small thumbnail frame. And it’s also worth noting that if you have a clips labeled with a color label that color goes away as you scrub the thumbnail, making it easier to see. Now if only we could make those thumbnails bigger ...

Might as well make it a FULL not HALF tip by mentioning that if you hold down the CTRL key while scrubbing then the poster-frame changes to the frame you’re on when you let go of the mouse button.

Yep, great addition to the tip. To be MORE specific on that you have to enable/press the CONTROL key WHILE you are scrubbing as FCP won’t let you scrub if you hit it first as it attempts to bring up a submenu and there is not submenu when the cursor is over a thumbnail.

And you can aslo change that Thumbnail column thumb by loading a clip in the Viewer and hitting CONTROL + P, the same thumbnail setting operation when in Large Icon view.

These kinds of tips can go on and on and on .....

Well, no, this one couldn’t go on actually. The last part doesn’t have anything to do with the original tip on the functionality/scrubbing of thumbnails.

And I in fact wrote WHILE not BEFORE btw. wink

My point was that these are QUICKtips that are short and fast (for the most part) and could, in general, go on and on.

I think the best part of Quicktips in general is they can be expanded upon such as your expansion with the CTRL addition to scrubbing as that makes it even more useful to thanks for adding!
