The Apple Magic Mouse just got a bit more useful

New application adds new functionality

A few weeks ago I wrote a review of the new Apple Magic Mouse and using it with Final Cut Studio. There’s now a little 3rd party application called MagicPrefs that adds even more functionality to the mouse.

MagicPrefs is a “free menubar application for OSX which aims to improve the functionality and configuration options of the Apple Magic Mouse.” It’s not a system preference pane but rather a little application that runs in the background. I immediately saw that it added a functionality that I greatly missed: Exposé. Two of the most used functions on my old Mighty Mouse was the middle-click for revealing the desktop and the side squeeze for revealing all windows via Exposé. MagicPrefs gives that back.

The app works by mapping one, two, three and four finger clicks and taps to new functions. You can set these things to several different commands:

To open the preferences for MagicPrefs just click the little mouse icon that it adds to your menubar:

There’s also the abilty to save your own presets and to adjust the tracking speed and tap sensitivity. To me this shows that there’s even more potential for the touch surface of the Magic Mouse. MagicPrefs has a tab for Swipes as well but as of this writing there’s no functionality for swipes but that shows where the developer is going with this. You’ll notice that the window above says “One Finger Middle Axis Click.” It looks like they are trying to emulate a middle mouse button with this option but I was unable to get it to operate in Color like a middle mouse button traditionally works.

But overall MagicPrefs makes the Apple Magic Mouse a bit more functional. It’s free but the developer does have a PayPal donation link so if you find the app useful then pass along a donation of thanks.

Q and A with Bunim/Murray’s Mark Raudonis about their recent Avid switch

Scott Simmons | 02/07

If you haven’t heard they have moved from FCP7 to Media Composer

Back in January news broke that reality television producers Bunim/Murray were switching their post-production facilities from Final Cut Pro to Avid Media Composer. This probably didn’t come as a great shock to anyone who follows post-production as the release of Final Cut Pro X had left many people (especially those…

Does this mean we now have left & right simultaneous click/hold available (such as is needed by MMORPGs like World of Warcraft & “WAR!”)?

Hmmm… I don’t think so but I can’t say for sure.

It’s incredible that Apple saw fit to remove the middle button function. Not being able to use it in Color really bugs me.

I use the wireless mighty mouse (now just Wireless Mouse) for side scrolls in FCP timeline, middle clicks & drags in Maya, and new tabs in Safari & Firefox.

When I just got it about two years ago (about the same time I ditched PC & switched to Mac) I threw it to the floor quite a few times.

Fast forward till today, the reason why I persisted cleaning the ball again and again instead of going back to el cheapo 3 button mouse or move ahead to magic mouse is because of the scroll ball. It is perfect except that scroll down gets stucked from time to time.

Magic mouse was a good news until I realized Apple ditch the middle click (button 3) but now with all those brought back with this nice app, now I have a reason to give it a try.

Thanks a lot for the hard work and patience.
