Smoke for Final Cut Pro Users

Getting started with Smoke

By Grant Kay | December 09, 2011

As a Senior Smoke Trainer here at Autodesk, I routinely get question from editors and artists asking me how Smoke compares to the software packages and plugins they use for everything from editing to color correction to visual effects. This has been especially true for Final Cut Pro editors - many of whom are exploring options as they ponder the future of their editorial and finishing workflow. And while a lot of these FCP users tell me they are excited about the possibility of trying out Smoke, the sheer complexity and breadth of creative tools in Smoke's all-in-one workflow can be a bit intimidating.{C} Read More

Running is always so tempting!

By Grant Kay | November 30, 2011

There is an old proverb that warns us against the temptation to "run before you learn to walk". This occurs in all aspects of our lives, and I guess that is what makes us human. As a senior trainer at Autodesk, I am always guiding people back to the basics. I've seen this temptation to leap right into the deep end with new software from people involved in all aspects of post production. And regardless of which software people are trying, they inevitably skip the basics and want to do the mind-blowing stuff right away. Smoke is certainly not the exception to this rule. In fact, the power of Smoke and the depth of its creative toolset can make it seem even more daunting than your typical application that does only one or two things. {C} Read More

Editing Promos in Stereo 3D and More with DC Collective

DC Collective is a creative boutique in the Washington D.C. area, and co-founder Adam Corey talks about why he likes Smoke.

By Marc-Andre Ferguson | November 22, 2011

DC Collective was started in May 2010 by partners Adam Corey and Thuy Dinh, both veterans of post who wanted to run their own show, so they opened a nice creative boutique. DC Collective specializes in short form, mostly for broadcast clients like Discovery, ESPN, National Geographic, TLC and the Travel Channel. Some advertisement work rounds out their portfolio, like a recent series of commercials for Rosetta Stone. When the time came to select a finishing suite, Adam and Thuy decided they wanted the least amount of IT problems as possible and opted for the Mac platform to build their business. They had seen Smoke on the Mac and decided to investigate. Now, DC Collective has four edit suites, two for offline with Final Cut Pro 7, and two finishing suites with Smoke, as well as FCP and the Adobe Creative Suite. Read More

Videomaker Review: DN-60 CF Card Field Recorder

Videomaker Review: DN-60 CF Card Field Recorder

The DN-60 reviewed by Mark Holden in the Sept. 2011 Issue of Videomaker Magazine

By V.F. Elliott | August 05, 2011

If you've got an aging DV or HDV camcorder whose heads are beginning to fail, or perhaps you simply want to step into the digital age, but your older camera still delivers great footage, then strapping a direct-capture-device onto that prized piece of video history may be exactly what the geriatrician ordered. Like all of us, camcorders eventually begin to age and parts don't work as well as they once did. Even then they may still have a lot of life left in them and aren't ready for the Soylent Green factory just yet. With two cameras fitting that description, a Canon XL2 and a JVC GY-DV100U, one begins looking for the camcorder fountain of youth. Some great products exist on the market today that are quite capable of meeting that need, but may be cost prohibitive, particularly when you have multiple units waiting to be sprung from the video retirement home. The Datavideo Corporation, however, may have come to the rescue with its DV/HDV Compact Flash card recorder - the DN-60.{C} Read More

Why the HS-2000 HD Mobile Studio Worked for Them - By Allan T©pper

By V.F. Elliott | May 09, 2011

DICHO & HECHO ("Said & Done") Productions, a startup production company in Guatemala City, Central America, recently purchased Datavideo's HS-2000 HD Mobile Studio to cover various sports events and other on-location productions in Guatemala. Because founders and directors Daniel Borrayo and Lyn Kachler had an extensive background in HD TV Production, they were particular about what equipment to use as their production staples when they started their new company. In fact, Daniel Borrayo had considered several options before choosing the HS-2000 Mobile Studio.{C} Read More
