Image Quality and the Contemporary Cine Lens
By PVC News Staff | January 22, 2013
Digital imaging continues to advance at a rapid pace. Hardly has high-definition digital video become an established norm than new global standards have been written for 4K and even 8K digital imaging systems. The proliferation of digital cinema cameras over the past half-decade has seen an accompanying expansion in new cine lens designs. Canon is an increasingly active player in this exciting new arena by developing nine new cine lens models in just the past year alone.
Canon invites you to an important presentation by Canon U.S.A.’s resident optics expert, Larry Thorpe, who will discuss current aspirations in video image quality and how these bear upon contemporary cine lens design. High-resolution video performance parameters will be reviewed and related to the realities of modern lens design and manufacturing. Special emphasis on optical Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and its relationship to perceived picture sharpness will be discussed in detail. The particular challenge of cine zoom lens design will be outlined.
Joining Mr. Thorpe is special guest Steven Poster, ASC and President of the International Cinematographers Guild, a seven thousand-member trade union representing camera professionals and film publicists across the United States. Mr. Poster has recently shot with Canon’s Cine prime and zoom lenses, and will share his creative experiences using both.
