Final Cut Studio Price Shocker
In a surprise move... Apple lowers prices in everyone's favor.
By Richard Harrington | July 23, 2009

Yes we all new it would eventually come... the "new Final Cut Studio" was announced.
We'll let the cheers and moans begin after a few days of testing the final release (just ordered mine 30 minutes ago).
But there are a few surprises.. mainly price!
Here's the great news (especially in this economy)
Final Cut Studio 2 - NEW was $1,299
the new Final Cut Studio - NEW is $999
Here's the best news
Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade - was $499 - $699
the new Final Cut Studio upgrade - is $299
I have confirmed... doesn't matter which version you are upgrading from...
I took it right to Apple and got a straight answer.
That is $299 for ANYONE to upgrade from a full copy of Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Studio (except Student or NFR copies).
More on new features soon... but let me just say:
In the current economic client, it's truly appreciated to see software pricing that respects the long-term customer. This is a no-brainer upgrade... speed and power without pinching your wallet. Thanks Apple... I mean it!

RT @comebackshane: Have a client that is trying to get you to use copywritten material in videos you are hired to edit? Don't let them. http://t.co/sMgzPoZA2y

It is a welcome surprise… but when you consider that this update really feels like a “.5” update, there probably would have been screaming and gnashing of teeth if the price were any higher.
Sequence markers moving in timeline, fixed Speed Change/Ripple issue, new ProRes flavors, Background Export, iChat Theater… none of these things are the “Shake in FCS” game changers that some folks were dreaming of, but it’s a lot of little improvements that will improve the FCS experience.

Be sure you read the 66 page new features document (see other article on home page). Seems like lots of LITTLE things are fixed as well as some big changers.
ProRes 4444 is huge. The Share options in Compressor (including Blu-ray) are awesome.
Some of the apps are .5 updates… Compressor & Color
But at $299.. I see a ton of improvements in Motion and SoundTrack Pro look awesome.

Dudes, I just bought a copy of FCS 2 for my home system. I installed it less than 48 hours ago. Apple can’t help because I bought it from B&H;, and B&H;won’t accept software returns after the product has been opened! I’m hosed. I paid $1200 for it. I was sure FCS 3 wouldn’t appear before Snow Leopard. I feel like a fool :(

I was surprised to see only a $100 difference between the full version and the academic version. Kind of strange. Not only is it a small price difference, but the Academic price went up from FCS 2 while it came down for the full version. Oh well…I suppose we students represent a tiny portion of the market so we get less love.

I did just hear that while the student version went up in cost… this new version WILL be upgradeable in the future.
