A fractalized 3D mesh for real time experimentation
By Rich Young | August 03, 2012
Trapcode Mir 1.0 was released this week. Mir creates 3D shapes that are built from a simple polygon mesh. Using fractal noise for distortion, texture mapping, repeating and wrapping geometry, and After Effects light integration -- all accelerated by your OpenGL hardware -- Mir generates smoothly shaded objects or flowing organic elements, bendable tubes & tunnels, nebulas, abstract landscapes, bar charts, and so forth, animated with light and depth. Shader options include Ambient Occlusion and wireframe mesh and point fills.

A survey

3D models and particles inside After Effects
By Rich Young | July 10, 2012
Video Copilot has released Element 3D, an After Effects plug-in that lets you import and animate 3D models, even as a particle array, and extrude text and mask shapes in real time. It's useful for all of us, for newbies and old hands & for straight 3D and more abstract experimentation, at least if you have a more recent OpenGL graphics card.

An updated survey of methods
By Rich Young | May 30, 2012
Creating 3D text in After Effects has long been a cottage industry, generating many workarounds and 3rd party plug-ins. Adding to the parade is one of the big new features in After Effects CS6, the extrusion and material options in the Ray-tracing renderer, which requires an Nvidia GPU. Many will benefit from beautiful renders by the new features, though many will get bogged down by requirements, render times, or inadequate features, and turn to older methods surveyed here.
