After Effects Lately
Assorted tutorials, tips, and scripts & plug-ins new and old
By Rich Young | June 18, 2012

AE news was a bit slow last week, even considering that a few items ended up in the tardy roundup of the previous week.
Creating Startrails in After Effects by T-Recs (Timelapse Recordings) is "a short overview about how to create moving startrails with your star timelapse" in AE. The final result is their Night Skies video (pictured). See also Creating Timelapse Movies in After Effects and Time-lapse and dynamic pans at AE Portal archive, and Kessler Timefest 2011 - Behind the Scenes of the TimeScapes Film from Tom Guilmette.
For more on AE's CC Time Blend FX, Motionworks posted CC Time Blend FX with Brian Maffitt from the Total FE (Final Effects) training series (on making smoke and plasma). Here's 'Creating Startrails' and Eran Stern on Blend and Bend Time with CC Time Blend FX:
Discovering After Effects, from Casey Faris and Rampant Design Tools, is a new free training series that covers the basics and on to more advanced techniques to help beginners become proficient in AE. See also Getting started with After Effects, a resource roundup by Todd Kopriva, and the aging Getting started with After Effects II. Here's the intro from Casey:
Brendan Bolles explained dataWindow and displayWindow in OpenEXR files.
Creative Dojo posted results of a speed test in ReelSmart Motion Blur vs CC Force Motion Blur. A similar test by Joren Kandel (which included the Timewarp filter) was noted in a mini-roundup Adding motion blur in After Effects. By the way, a few years ago Danie Bachler proposed Using brainstorm in After Effects to find optimum timewarp settings:
Trent Armstrong posted Preset: Words On at Markers on Motion Graphics Xchange, a "preset for text allows one to instantly reveal each successive word at each new layer marker."
AE Portal added several resource roundups in the past few weeks, including:
- Creating 3D Text in After Effects
- The Shatter Effect in After Effects
- Remove banding in After Effects
- Lip Sync in After Effects
Awhile back, Jesse Toula posted Scripting for After Effects, a 2-part video tutorial:
"Part 1 will go over the basic JavaScript concepts that will be needed to create your first script. This tutorial will not turn you into an expert, but it will give you a starting point and a basic understanding of the capabilities of scripts and how they can help improve your work-flow. In part 2 of Scripting for After Effects, we'll go through some After Effects specific concepts so that we can create a simple, but functional script. Learn to select layers and compositions, find layer properties, create undo groups and functions and much more."
Here's part 1:
Fred Ruckel at Post magazine reviews GenArts Monster GT plug-ins for After Effects.
Meet Visual Effects Company 'Red Giant' at Forbes is part of series of pages in profile of this major plug-in developer.
"Marvel's The Avengers": Taking the HUD to new heights by Kathy Charneco is an "interview with the HUD's Creative Director and Screen Designer." Also in the news lately is The Avengers Find Their Way Using Cinema 4D and The City Kit by GreyscaleGorilla, VFX roll call for The Avengers (updated) by Mike Seymour, We Talk to the Creator of The Avengers UI and Iron Man's HUD, and The craft of screen graphics and movie user interfaces - conversation with Jayse Hansen.
Continuing is "Screen Fillers" Graphic User Interface Elements by Stefan Surmabojov, a series of tutorials on AEtuts. Here's the latest promo:
Please note that these roundups are for quick review and comparison. There is almost always vital information from the originating authors at the links provided-and often free presets, projects, or stock footage too.
