Colored Light Strokes and Streaks

Mattrunks on 3D Stroke, plus some alternatives

By Rich Young | July 20, 2011

In a new training video in English and French, Colored Light Paths with 3D Stroke, Mattias Peresini (aka Mattrunks) shows the basics of Trapcode 3D ??Stroke. There were been a number of similar tutorials in days of iPod and graffiti yore, but they're harder to find now that the effect is not as popular. Tutorials by Brad Chmielewski (Animated Cartoon Arrows) and  Nick Campbell (How to make 3D Text and use 3D Stroke in After Effects) are still easy to find though.

Andrew Kramer has several alternatives: 3D Stroke Effect using CC Particle World, Light Streaks and the improved Light Streaks 2 using Trapcode's Particular, and of course some light flares.

A little further afield are Spirograph designs, which are a popular use of expressions; see Spiral shaped motion pathsSpirograph-style pattern generator in AE by Chris Zwar (inspired by the spirograph tutorial from Ayato), and Dan Ebberts on spirograph expressions. Along those same lines but using Particular and expressions is Generate Your Own Splendid Spirographical Designs by Christopher Kirkman on Aetuts+. Variations on spirograph patterns can also be made in After Effects with standard tools. Other similar tutorials by Satya Meka (on the Radio Waves effect) and others were referenced in A few spirographs in After Effects at AE Portal archive.
Also similar is AE Flame, a free plug-in for CS4 & CS5. Going further still is Freddie Wong and crew with Light Warfare, which builds on earlier

All the links are to tutorials to make these kinds of graphics.

Some require Trapcode or other 3rd party filters; others do not.
