Up with downloads
Perceptive people pick popular pages
By The Sony Tech Guy | July 20, 2011

We're campaigning. This is our button.
You might not know this, but one of our motivations in launching the Sony Livewire vendor blog was to have a place on Pro Video Coalition where readers could have easy access to Sony downloads. On the right side of the Livewire home page there lives a series of DOWNLOAD buttons, ready to serve up goodies for XDCAM, XDCAM EX, AVCHD and HDV products. If web traffic is any indication, it seems to be working. The download pages are among Sony's most popular. For example, about once every two minutes someone makes a download from the relevant XDCAM optical web pages. And now we're making that process even nicer.
We've created one new direct-access download page for XDCAM optical and XDCAM EX product firmware and setup utilities and another page for application software. This means you no longer need to visit our SoftwarePLUS site and noodle around to find your downloads. We also tweaked the listings with a dedicated section for legacy applications and placed the most popular downloads first. Finally, we created shorter, easier URLs.
For XDCAM/XDCAM EX Application Software (i.e. XDCAM Transfer, etc), Plug-Ins and Device Driver Downloads: www.sony.com/xdcam-software
For XDCAM/XDCAM EX Product Firmware (i.e. PDW-U1, PMW-F3, etc) and Setup Utility Downloads: www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads
To download product manuals, you can still go to the individual product pages at sony.com/professional or visit www.sony.com/xdcam-manuals. At the moment, only the XDCAM optical products are here but we will soon be adding XDCAM EX models as well.
If you like what you see, stay tuned. We've got plans to make these downloads even more intuitive in the future.

THANK YOU.
Downloading Sony plugins has always been a painful experience in the past, especially on Safari.

This is nice. From PVC it’s just four seperate links to the various pages. It’s actually harder to find them on your own on the Sony site than it is from these links.
What would be even handier, is a higher-level, “umbrella” download page, for people who manage HDV, XDCAM, AVCHD and more. Having to drill down into separate microsites means I have to maintain separate bookmarks for each of the download pages.
Why not a Sony.com/ProDL page?
And then put Downloads under the Support tab on the Sony site too.
