What are your thoughts? Did the ACE editors make the best choices? Will this be an indication of how the OSCARs will go? Past results say they will.

In an upcoming Art of the Cut interview with “Straight Outta Compton” editor, Billy Fox, I asked how he judges “Best Editing.” Here is his response: “That’s a very interesting question. My personal viewpoint on that is that I look for something that’s different. Most all the submitted work is good. But I look for the technique that’s a bit different. It’s what motivates me but may not be what everyone else looks for.”

Another Art of the Cut interviewee was Tom McArdle, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Editing for “Spotlight.” Tom’s response to this question of “how do you best judge editing” was this: “I like to see a film where I just get immersed in the movie – where I forget that I’m watching a film–where it is completely compelling. A few people have mentioned “Zodiac” to me lately and I remember watching that film and thinking, “My God, this is so well cut. I’m just totally interested, and two and a half hours just flew by.”
