USA-based developer divergent media (which prefers that we write their name in all lower case) just released a update to their ClipWrap application, about which I published a complete review back in November 2011. The new palindromic version is 2.5.2 and includes conforming (i.e. to create natural 2.5x slow motion by conforming AVCHD 1080/59.94p to 23.976p, or fast motion by conforming a slower framerate to a faster one) and a few other new features as you’ll see ahead.
New in ClipWrap 2.5.2
- Conforming capability
- Support for Panasonic SD800 PsF modes
- Fix for Panasonic HC-V100 hang
- Retina graphics
- A palindromic version number!
Although conforming capabilities is built into the latest versions of most professional software video editors, this feature is quite welcome in ClipWrap since some of the professional video software editors don’t yet recognize certain formats, like AVCHD 1080p59.94, which is a very desirable raw format for producers who want to create natural slow motion by conforming to 29.97p (2x) or 23.976p (2.5x). In fact, I used ClipWrap to do this very thing when I prepared the fourth video in my recent review called: Sony NX70: the rainproof HD camera that may leave you with drops in your eyes. On the other hand, if you have a segregated 50 Hz camera, it can conform 1080p50 to 1080p25… or if you have a WorldCam camera and need to deliver your project in 25p, it can conform 1080p59.94 to 1080p25. Of course, ClipWrap can do the same thing to conform 720p59.94 to 720p23.976 or 720p50 to 720p25, but most modern video editing editors can do that too.
I have confirmed that the new conform feature in ClipWrap fortunately works even in ClipWrap’s default mode, where ClipWrap re-wraps the video without transcoding it. That’s my preferred method for using ClipWrap most of the time with H.264 footage on a modern Mac. If you don’t know what I mean by that, feel free to read my full ClipWrap review from November 2011.
