Rubén Abruña (who now lives in Zurich, Switzerland) recently received his new Blackmagic Cinema Camera which he had ordered in July of 2012. Rubén decided to take a one-day break from the grading of his La Casa Ausente documentary to test his new camera and its workflow with DaVinci Resolve 9 and FCP X. Inspired by Vertov and Goethe, Rubén shot a short story about the waterwheel near his house in Zürich, which you’ll see ahead.
Rubén recommends watching this video while listening with headphones.
Rubén’s field production with the Blackmagic Cinema Camera
Rubén wanted to see how well the camera would handle a wide dynamic range of light and shadows (13 stops of dynamic range), since this is what the manufacturer and other users have claimed to be its main strength. Rubén shot in high resolution at 2432×1366 and in uncompressed CinemaDNG RAW 12-bit, 25p with the shutter at 180 degrees. He used a Sigma 8–16mm F4.5–5.6 lens. Audio was recorded in-camera with its built-in microphone.
Rubén’s post-production workflow
- Rubén loaded the uncompressed CinemaDNG RAW 12-bit material into DaVinci Resolve.
- Made a rough assembly (no grading yet).
- Exported an XML to Final Cut Pro 10.0.8, where he edited audio and video.
- Created and edited the music.
- Exported an XML to DaVinci Resolve 9.
- Did a Primary grade on each shot.
- Exported an XML to FCP.
- Added credits in FCP.
- Uploaded it to Vimeo Pro as 1280 x 720 @ 25p, stereo.
Ruben declared: “I am convinced and excited to have such a wonderful motion picture camera.”
