Today I did it, although sadly and reluctantly: I opted out of my Vimeo Pro auto-renewal. Like many Vimeo Pro and Vimeo Plus users, I have been patiently waiting since March 2013 for them to fix the Android playback of embedded Vimeo videos on sites other than Vimeo.com. As reported previously, that was working fine before March… and continued to work fine on all competitive online services other than Vimeo that I have tested.
Yes, I am the same Allan Tépper who has published around six articles about Vimeo since 2010, including one called 11 things I love about Vimeo Pro.
The main reason that many of my colleagues and I have been paying for and using Vimeo Pro have been to embed videos on non-Vimeo.com websites and —in some cases— Vimeo Pro Portfolios (which are very often configured with our own names or subdomains, as explained in detail in this article). While Vimeo videos are playing properly on Android devices when on the Vimeo.com site, that is not the main reason why my colleagues and I have been paying for the Vimeo Pro service. Although it must be clear by now that I really do love the Vimeo Pro service, I cannot continue to pay for a service that simply doesn’t work on approximately half of the mobile devices out there, and I certainly won’t tell Android device users to leave my site (or the ProVideoCoalition.com site) to see the videos. And for those who may not have my seen my other recent relative article, Vimeo is very aware of the problem and has been promising to fix it ever since March 2013, although without committing to an exact time.
What will happen now?
As indicated in the screenshot above (which appeared just before I clicked the big red button), unless I renew manually before August 4, 2013, my account and all associated videos, Vimeo Pro Portfolios, and activity will be permanently removed from Vimeo. If I become aware (and verify) that Vimeo has fixed the problem before that date, then I’ll be happy and renew manually. Otherwise, I’ll sadly be using some other service for this purpose. Either way, I’ll let you know in an upcoming article.
