At IBC in Amsterdam, Átomos announced its new Spyder calibration system for its Samurai Blade monitor/10-bit 4:2:2 HD recorder. According to Átomos, this new device allows one-click accurate calibration of the Samurai Blade’s display to Rec 709 color space with a D65 (6500 degrees Kelvin) white point with 100% gamut. Now you can calibrate your field monitor with one click while you record 10-bit 4:2:2 HD video.
Átomos is offering the Spyder for Samurai Blade in cooperation with Datacolor. Evidently, this is a special OEM version of the Spyder calibration system that Datacolor has offered for general use for many years. Átomos states that the Átomos Spyder has initially been developed for the Samurai Blade with implementation on other Átomos recorders available soon.
The US$1295 Samurai Blade recorder/monitor includes a 5″ SuperAtom IPS, 1280×720 IPS 325PPI touchscreen panel with waveform monitor/vectorscope. Like its Ninja–2 and Samurai predecessors, Samurai Blade allows the recording of 10-bit 4:2:2 images straight from the camera’s uncompressed output to inexpensive HDD or SSD drives, captured using the Apple ProRes422 or Avid DNxHD códec. It can also reverse telecine (remove nasty pulldown) from cameras that offer 29.97p—over—59.94i, 25p—over—50i, or 23.976p—over—59.94i, like the H2S converter which I reviewed here.
The US$199 Átomos Spyder package will be available in November and will include a USB—to—LANC serial control unit for automatic calibration with the Samurai Blade. I have already requested an evaluation unit and hope to publish a review shortly after receiving it.
