In hopeful anticipation of greater things in a (then only rumored) iPhone 6 (5.5 inch version) with improved mediography capabilities, I put my iPad Mini Retina 128GB up for sale last week. Today, Apple confirmed the rumor that there would indeed be a 5.5 version of the iPhone 6, which is officially called the iPhone 6 Plus. Ahead are its new video features and specs.
Note that the photo above shows the new iPhone 4.7 inch next to the new iPhone Plus 5.5 inch model, but this quick article focuses on the Plus model, which in addition to a larger screen, has a higher-resolution screen and optical image stabilization.
iPhone 6 Plus 5.5 inch new video specs
Apparently, the 8 megapixel sensor, 1.5 micron pixels and f/2.2 aperture are all carried over and is the same as the ones debuted with the iPhone 5s. However, the features you’ll see below are brand-new, to my knowledge:
- 5-element lens architecture
- Tone mapping to help reduce noise, especially in low light shots
- 1080p HD slow motion at ±60 fps
- 720p HD slow motion at ±240 fps
- Phase-detection focus pixels enabled by the new Apple-designed image signal processor, for better and faster autofocus that you can even see in preview
- HDR video
- Optical image stabilization
- Time lapse video
Other general improvements that caught my eye
- Better LTE
- Up to 3x faster WiFi, thanks to new support for 802.11ac
- WiFi calling for the rest of us. (Before now I have had WiFi calling via Google Voice over Hangouts and previously via third-party apps, via Line 2, and previously via T-Mobile’s WiFi calling.)
Initial pricing
No-contract versions of the iPhone 6 Plus have now been posted by Apple US: They are US$749, US$849, and US$949 for 16GB, 64GB, or 128GB respectively. That’s what I want, since I currently have free mobile telephone and data service, and you can too if you live in the US or Puerto Rico, since the company I use is contract-free and compensates its users with free service after referring to friends.
For those readers who prefer subsidized phones and contracts, in the US, the iPhone 6 Plus will require an initial payment of US$299, US$399 or US$499 on contract for 16GB, 64GB and 128GB versions respectively. After that, you’ll have to pay every month for two years.
Upcoming reviews done with the iPhone 6 Plus
Sometime after September 20th, at least some of my upcoming audio/video iOS reviews will be done with the iPhone 6 Plus.

My latest book (paperback + ebook)
My most recent book is available in two languages, and in paperback as well as an ebook. The ebook format is Kindle, but even if you don’t have a Kindle device, you can read Kindle books on many other devices using a free Kindle app. That includes iPad, Android tablets, Mac computers, and Windows computers. Although generally speaking, Kindle books are readable on smartphones like Androids and iPhones, I don’t recommend it for this particular book since it contains both color photos and color comparison charts. The ebook is also DRM-free.
