At NAB in Las Vegas, AJA announced that it will lend its controversial 4K/UltraHD/2K/HD CION camera to qualifying applicants, initially in the US and Canada. At the AJA press conference where I was invited, AJA quoted many of the same tech journalists that Art Adams mentioned in his recent article in ProVideo Coalition magazine, and naturally neglected to quote Art’s statements. Ahead is more info on CION, and how to apply for AJA to loan it to you for a particular project.

CION is the new production camera from AJA, the award-winning palindromic manufacturer founded in 1993 in California, United States. To be clear about its 4K options, CION offers both the video/television version of 4K [aka Ultra HD (3840×2160) which is 16:9], together with the cinema version of 4K (4096×2160) which is wider than 16:9.
With its slogan Science of the beautiful, the US$8995 CION can shoot directly to edit-ready Apple ProRes 4444 at up to 4K (4096×2160) 29.97 fps (or 30 fps, but it is truly questionable why you would ever use 30 fps, since it is non-standard) , ProRes 422 at up to 4K (4096×2160) at 59.94 fps or 60fps, or output AJA Raw at up to 4K (4096×2160) at 119.88 fps or 120fps. In an upcoming related article, I’ll explain why although using 30.000 fps makes absolutely no sense to me, when sometimes it indeed makes sense to shoot any of the 59.94, 60, 119.88 or 120 fps, and when to use each.
Try it, maybe you’ll like it
AJA’s #TryCION campaign slogan reminds me of the famous 1972 Alka-Selzer commercial spot.:
My grandfather used to modify the original “Try it, you’ll like it” slogan to be “Try it, maybe you’ll like it”. The above commercial spot was not shot with a CION, since it is from 1972.
AJA is initially offering 100 CION production cameras to qualified shooters in the US and Canada so they can experience what the company describes as “the incredible film-like beauty of CION” for themselves. Click here to apply for a loan of the CION camera.

My latest book (paperback + ebook)
My most recent book is available in two languages, and in paperback as well as an ebook. The ebook format is Kindle, but even if you don’t have a Kindle device, you can read Kindle books on many other devices using a free Kindle app. That includes iPad, Android tablets, Mac computers, and Windows computers. Although generally speaking, Kindle books are readable on smartphones like Androids and iPhones, I don’t recommend it for this particular book since it contains both color photos and color comparison charts. The ebook is also DRM-free.
