An A to Z of Building Projections – Part 1

If you have any interest in motion graphics at all, you’ll have noticed the increasing popularity of building projections all around the world.
This two-part presentation gives a behind the scenes look into two different building projection projects – a small scale production for New Year’s Eve in Melbourne, Australia, and a large scale event for the Alfa Bank in Russia – the largest building projection ever staged to date.

Part 1 is a general overview of building projections and offers some insight into the staging of two different sized building projection projects.

Part 2 specifically looks at how the animations for the Melbourne projections were created in After Effects using the Taronites plug-in “Z-Born Toy”.

As the Melbourne project was very small in scale – it was essentially a pitch – Frischluft generously donated a licence for Z-Born Toy, which enabled us to keep the entire workflow within After Effects.

If you’re interested in more information about the projections that are discussed here, then try the following links:

Spinifex
Spinifex is the Sydney based production company that produced the animated content for the Russian Alfa Bank show.

Motionographer
While you can try your luck on Youtube, Motionographer compiled a collection of building projection videos a few years ago.

Taronites
Taronites produce a reasonably obscure After Effects plugin called ‘Z-Born Toy’, which Frischluft generously donated to us for the Melbourne project. It enabled us to keep the entire production workflow within After Effects, and is the subject of Part 2.
