The 65mm Alexa rumor is now confirmed. Arri announces a 6K 65mm Alexa called Alexa 65 with a 54.12 x 25.59 mm (diagonal 59.87 mm) frame which is larger than 65mm film.
There have been a lot of rumors about Arri making a 65mm digital camera. Now it is confirmed with a sensor that is larger than 5-perf 65mm film. The Alexa 65 is their first step into large frame digital film-making. With a similar design to the Alexa, the Alexa 65mm has a wider body, to fit the larger sensor that is 3 x larger than S35mm. With a resolution of 6560 x 3102 the Alexa 65 offers a lot of what photographers love about the Alexa: Great sensitivity, natural colorimetry, and high dynamic range but with a much larger image. Does this make 65mm film-making more affordable? To quote Arri, “The overall performance, cost-efficiency and flexibility of the ALEXA 65 will allow many high-profile productions the choice to shoot with 65 mm digital in their entirety, or alternatively, utilize the scale and fidelity of the large capture format for selected establishing shots or high-impact VFX sequences.”
