In this edition of the Alan Smithee podcast, hosts Scott Simmons, Katie Hinsen and Michael Kammes discuss technological advancements that have significantly impacted their careers over the past two decades. The conversation centers around three main themes: innovation in production tools, the evolution of workflows due to the rise of digital media, and the transformative influence of social platforms on the industry.
“The day raw video became a thing was the day my life got significantly better,” Hinsen said.
They finish the discussion with a Thanksgiving-themed ranking of technologies, revealing their gratitude for innovations that have improved their work lives.

And we’ve had a few folks share their top 3 as well.
What are 3 things you’re thankful for in your media career?
Here are mine:
1. FCP7. Film school, first short films, first job, and first feature doc all used it
2. Canon XL-1. I shot dozens of shorts with it
3. P2 cards. File-based footage 🙌H/t @editblog.bsky.social @michaelkammes.bsky.social

1) Working at Apple as phone tech support. Knowing Apple tech landed me many film/TV jobs, including first feature
2) FCP. Inexpensive editing software revolutionized indie filmmaking
3) film school. Helped me know what career path best suited me by having me do everything on sets

3 Things I’m Thankful For:
1. All the mentors & friends who took the time to teach/explain things to me.
2. The longevity in this biz to develop my intuition, which is (by far) the most powerful tool in my bag.
3. The Deep Magic that makes people cry/think when you put two unrelated shots together.— Christian Glawe (@christianglawe.bsky.social) November 20, 2024 at 11:34 PM
1. Apple – seems cliche now but their 2000s focus on creativity did open up the industry for a lot of people.
2. YouTube – lots more opportunities to get paid to edit rather than assist at the start of your career.
3. Dropbox – would go nuts bouncing between desktop and laptop without it!
