Digital Economy Bill may hit agents, say lawyer

Agents and some publishers may need to register with the government, pay annual fees and be subject to codes of practice, as an unexpected consequence of the Digital Economy Bill, according to copyright experts at law firm Beachcroft LLP.
Lawyers warned this could be the consequence of provisions in the Bill regarding the control of “licensing bodies”. Any “organisation” which licenses any copyright material created by more than one individual, or which acts as agent for any such owners, will be affected by the new requirement.
