If you’re attending NAB this year, don’t miss Adobe’s panel discussion at 12:00 on Tuesday, April 12 in room S222 called Digital Rebels: The New Generation of Filmmakers & Storytellers to hear from a new breed of filmmakers who are changing the rules for film production and distribution. The panel will be hosted by Johnny Loiocono, SVP and General Manager of Adobe’s Digital Media Solutions business unit.
Defying the big, bloated movie budgets of the past, today’s digital rebels are making their films fast and with surprisingly low budgets. But make no mistake; the caliber and quality of these films is right up there with the best of the best. Featured panelists include Tyler Nelson, Assistant Editor on the smash hit The Social Network among many other high-profile Hollywood projects; Gareth Edwards, an award-winning British filmmaker whose latest project Monsters has received critical acclaim on the global independent film circuit; and Jacob Rosenberg, filmmaker, author and digital media expert who has contributed to many films including Avatar, Superman Returns, and Dust to Glory. The panel will discuss what tools they’re using-such as RED and DSLR cameras, and software that provides integrated solutions and workflows that make this amazing storytelling possible.
Panelist Biographies
Tyler Nelson
Tyler Nelson has always liked making sense of chaos. From childhood, Nelson was fond of disassembling stereos and doorknobs, then putting them back together – a talent that has served him exceptionally well as assistant editor on some of the most popular and critically acclaimed films of our decade. Nelson is currently the assistant editor of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, based on the book by Stieg Larsson and directed by The Social Network’s David Fincher. Earlier, as assistant editor on The Social Network, Nelson worked with Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter, the Academy Award-winning editors for the film. Nelson is known for developing strong technical workflows that enable directors to make changes until the very last minute, saving significant dollars in production costs. Before The Social Network, Nelson was assistant editor for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Nelson started his career as an assistant editor at Angus Wall’s commercial editing house, Rock Paper Scissors, before moving from commercials to feature films. Nelson received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Gareth Edwards
Gareth Edwards is no stranger to pushing the boundaries of filmmaking. An accomplished director, writer and cinematographer, Edwards has been tapped by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to direct the new Godzilla movie, tentatively set for release next year. He is also developing an epic sci-fi film with Russian director, producer and screenwriter, Timur Bekmambetov. Most recently, Edwards wrote and directed Monsters, the 2010 independent sci-fi thriller. He was tapped by Vertigo Films for Monsters after, feeling frustrated with a perceived “factory approach” to filmmaking, Edwards entered and won the 2008 Sci-Fi-London 48-hour film contest, proving he could make a cinematic film with no crew and just one actor in only two days. Before beginning work on Monsters, Edwards had already carved out a successful career as a BAFTA-award winning and Emmy-nominated visual effects creator for clients such as The Discovery Channel and the BBC. His series include Attila the Hun – in which he created all of the 250 visual effects himself, 7 Wonders of the Industrial World, and Space Race. Previously, Edwards directed Perfect Disaster, a TV series documentary. He graduated from the West Surrey College of Art and Design, where he was one of the first students to combine live action with digital effects in his graduation film.
Jacob Rosenberg
Jacob Rosenberg was born and raised in the heart of Silicon Valley. He is a filmmaker, author, and digital technology expert. Rosenberg developed his passion for video and film as a skateboarder in the early 1990s, making acclaimed videos for Plan B Skateboards. Upon his graduation from Emerson College and the DVD release of his thesis film Silent Rain in the Ninth, Rosenberg began his career directing music videos, commercials and short films. Rosenberg connected with Bandito Brothers founders Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh when he served as the Online Editor and Digital Intermediate Supervisor for Dust to Glory in 2004. Rosenberg designed an all-digital workflow for Dust to Glory utilizing 1080p HD as its digital intermediate format, mixing nine different video formats seamlessly and printing the HD edit directly to film. Subsequent to Dust to Glory, Rosenberg contributed his technical knowledge to a number of feature film projects, including Superman Returns, Errol Morris’ Standard Operating Procedure, Martin Scorsese’s Rolling Stones documentary Shine a Light, James Cameron’s Avatar, and the acclaimed independent film, August Evening. His recent directing credits include the short film “December Story” and commercials for Harvey Nichols, Zebra Technologies and Ford.
