Here’s a small group trip to work and share with a variety of artists, and it’s moderately priced. An interesting opportunity, especially for anyone working with a hybrid camera or just getting started in making both stills and video. You’ll be in an ideal place to capture once in a lifetime color and action.

Karl and I will be there for this spectacular trip covering Palm Sunday March 18-28th in Guatemala. Holy week celebrations offers some of the most colorful pageantry to excite the travel photojournalist. The famous quote is, “If you want to make more interesting photos, point your camera at something more interesting.”

Antigua in Guatemala is perhaps as well known for beautiful Easter holy week celebrations as Patzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan and Oxaca in Mexico for for Days of the Dead events, or equal to Oxaca or San Miguel de Allende for wonderful ethnic atmosphere and exotic street happenings. We are so lucky that these amazing traditions can still be sought out and exist in many ways just as they have for centuries.

What an experience, what a way to broaden our photographic horizons. The pictures you bring back will keep your audience on the edge of their seats. No boring travelogues here! Read on: this is not as expensive as you think.

Some of the most unique elements will be right under your feet. Streets are adorned with intricately patterned carpets made from flowers, sawdust, vegetables. They’re called “alfombras”. One is more colorful and amazing than the last, as wonderful as the Guatemalan textiles you probably have seen. You’ll be there to watch as carpets are made during the lead up preparations. You may even get a chance to participate in the preparation.

Behind the scenes action can be as photogenic as the actual huge processions. And being there from start to finish will give you a “work in progress” story to tell that you will not find elsewhere. This type of photojournalist essay is what I call a “Cultural Landscape”, the place, the people and the event. I can describe what will happen, but the size of the crowds, the number and length of the processions, the unique decor will simply blow you away. Words become inadequate.

Knowing when and where to be right in the action is essential to ethnic storytelling. And for this particular group trip the timing and opportunities have been specifically laid out for you to maximize exposure to the most interesting aspects of the country and the religious events. Photojournalists’ heaven! Obviously pre travel preparation is key, and that’s partly where the workshop comes in. We’ll help you get the best out of your experience.

The group will be small, proposed about 20 people, artists in various mediums (there is another painting instructor as well), traveling slowly to give time to fully capture the unfolding spectacles, discussing angles, compositional elements, photojournalistic coverage to maximize details and story. The dates cover most to the interesting events, and a few of us plan to stay on a couple days – we’re hot for all of it!

Other places to be visited will be Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlan and the world famous market of Chichicastenango. A pre-workshop visit to the ruins of Tikal is possible.

The cost for 10 days? $1895 includes workshop, double room, all breakfasts, 5 dinners and in-country transportation. You pay your flights, other meals, alcoholic beverages and travel/personal insurance separately.
