Exploding Text in Motion

Exploding Text in Motion 1

This week on MacBreak Studio, I show Steve Martin from Ripple Training how to “blow away” text.

One of the most fun and powerful things to do in Motion is combining different features. In this episode, I use a Replicator to “create” some text by using a text layer as the source object to which the replicator attaches copies of the cell object – which can be anything, including images, video or even other Motion objects.

Once the text is created by using many copies of a graphic, I then “explode” those copies off the screen using a Repel behavior applied to shape layer. By turning off the visibility of the shape (and the underlying source text layer as well), and drastically increasing the strength of the repel behavior, the text appears to break apart of its own accord.

You can even make this type of animation work in 3D space by enabling 3D for the Replicator and moving the repelling object off the same plane as the text. By enabling “Face Camera”, the replicated objects will appear to be spheres rather than flat circles as they explode out in 3 dimensions.
