With hundreds of careers and opportunities, the filmmaking industry can be a unique experience for a filmmaker. Filmtools decided to take a deeper look into the world of a Filmmaker. This week, we had the opportunity to speak to Filmmaker Jacob Steagall about his work. This is what he said:
What’s your name and where are you from?
Jacob Steagall: My name is Jacob Steagall. I was born in Tucson, Arizona in 1995 and then shortly after moved to Thousand Oaks, CA where I still live today.
How did you get interested in Filmmaking?
Jacob Steagall: My interest for film started very young. I am fortunate that my entire family is in the film industry so I have grown up around sets and was always curious about all the different jobs that went in to film making. My father is a Transportation Coordinator currently at Warner Brothers and my mother is a VP of Commercial Sales for a payroll company called Caps. Also my older brother is an Actor who is new in the industry as well.
What is your role typically on set?
Jacob Steagall: Typically on set I have been an AC (assistant camera) or B Camera Operator. I have not had a ton of experience on major productions but on the smaller productions and videos I have done, typically that is my role.
If you had to impress someone with your work, what would be the most “well-known” content that you’ve worked on?
Jacob Steagall: Most well known piece I have worked on is a music video for Jamie Foxx for a song called “In Love By Now“. I was an AC for some portions of the shoot and that is the most well know project I was a part of that is released as of now.

How did you break into this industry?
Jacob Steagall: For me getting into the industry is something I am currently doing. I just graduated from a four year university with a Bachelors of Arts Degree. The thing that started my career and allowed me to travel the world and film for various projects is Drones. Flying drones for productions as well as building a name for myself through the company I worked with. Drones gave me a way of filming from a different vantage point and being a part of one of the biggest drone retail and repair companies (Dronefly) gave me access to equipment and people with similar skills and interest and that allowed me to grow to where I am now.
Best craft services food?
Jacob Steagall: Best craft service food…Brisk Lemon Ice Tea and Original Lays Potato chips
Current TV obsession?
Jacob Steagall: Big Bang Theory
Jacob Steagall: Depending on the show I usually pace it out but I have binge watched a couple shows in the past.
What piece of gear do you have your eye on?
Jacob Steagall: Currently looking at buying a Red Camera.
Camera – Should you own or rent?
Jacob Steagall: I would love to own more gear as I progress but as of now I rent most of the time.
Lenses – Should you own or rent?
Jacob Steagall: Same as for cameras. I want to own more one day but as of now I am ok with renting.
Do you have a piece of essential gear that you don’t leave without?
Jacob Steagall: My go-to product for work is a multi-tool (Leatherman). It has so many options for tools that it really comes in handy for most tasks needed on set.
Where can people follow you on social, or check out your work?
Jacob Steagall: People can find my work on Instagram. Currently it is mainly my still photography work but I am in the process of getting more of my video content up as well.
