With hundreds of careers and opportunities, the filmmaking industry can be a unique experience for a filmmaker. Filmtools decided to take a deeper look into the world of a Filmmaker. This week, we had the opportunity to speak to Filmmaker Tony Reyes about his work. This is what he said:
What is your name, and where are you from?
Tony Reyes: My name is Tony Reyes and I am from Nashville, TN
What is your primary role on set?
Tony Reyes: My primary role on set is Steadicam Op.
What Person in the industry that is on the top of his or her game in your role?
Tony Reyes: John Perry & Neal Bryant
If you had to impress someone with your work, what would be the most “well-known” content that you’ve worked on?
Tony Reyes: Thomas Rhett – Star of the Show (maybe not most well known but I am proud of this)
Best craft services food?
Tony Reyes: Steak & RedBull.
Current TV obsession?
Tony Reyes: Game of Thrones, Ancient Aliens & most any documentaries.
Do you binge-watch new shows or pace them out?
Tony Reyes: Binge.
What piece of gear do you have your eye on?
Tony Reyes: Arri Trinity & the new sled coming from Tiffen.
Camera – Should you own or rent?
Tony Reyes: I’d say it’s all circumstantial. I lean towards renting because cameras are always changing. Also, I think it’s good to support rental houses. If I was going to own cameras or lenses I would chose lenses simply because they stay relevant for so long.

What is your preferred camera system? Lenses?
Tony Reyes: Alexa Mini w/Cooke Pancho’s or Zeiss Master Anamorphic’s – it’s all circumstantial though : )
Do you have a piece of essential gear that you don’t leave without?
Tony Reyes: I’d say my American rolling Steadicam stand would be number one. Second would be my Scout 37 Inovativ cart. Being able to set the Steadicam down and reposition is crucial to saving your energy for the actual shot.
Whats the first thing you do on set?
Tony Reyes: Check in with the DP and or find my spot to set up.
What’s in your bag when you go to set?
Tony Reyes: In my work bag…I don’t leave with out a handful of things: Bose headphones, tools, iPad mini, snacks, battery for my phone, iPhone cables, bottle opener, finger nail clippers, a credential for flying with gear. I could go on but I’ll spare everyone.
Why did you choose this field?
Tony Reyes: Several reasons. The most memorable reason: I got the opportunity to watch a pro op on set, John Perry. Seeing what he was able to do with a Steadicam really hooked me. From then on it was a dream. To this day I still tell people I’m literally living my dream.
What advice would you give to people interested in this industry?
Tony Reyes: It’s a lot of fun but it isn’t for everyone. Freelancing can be brutal. If you do go freelance make a few goals for yourself: 1. Short term goal (Ex. I’m going to get “X” amount of days of work this month). 2. Mid term goal (Ex. I’m going to gain “X” amount of new clients in the next 6 months). 3. Long term goal (Ex. I’m going to get this job _____ at some point in my career). Don’t be so hard on yourself. Try to set realistic goals. Hit me up on IG if you have any questions. I really try to help out where I can.
