I can log my footage in the Finder?
Yes, that is now possible thanks to a new feature in the 10.1.2 update to Final Cut Pro X which imports Finder Tags as keyword collections.
In Mavericks, you can now assign metadata to any file in the Finder with Finder Tags – an expansion on the labeling concept that's been around for a long time. But with Finder Tags, in addition to colors, you can “tag” a file with any words you want – and you can assign multiple tags to a single file. Much as you might assign keywords in Final Cut Pro X, right? Exactly!
In this episode of MacBreak Studio, Steve Martin from Ripple Training demonstrates this incredibly useful feature by using Finder Tags to add metadata to video clips in the Finder, making sure the feature is enabled in Import Preferences, and then importing the clips. Oh, and when he imports the clips, he demonstrates another new feature in 10.1.2 – the ability to drag clips from the Finder directly to the Browser in FCP X.
While you could always drag clips from the Finder to a specific Event in the Library list, the Browser is a much larger target, making it easier to perform drag and drop importing. The only caveat with this method is that you need to be aware of your import setting in Preferences so that you know how your files will be imported: either to the location you've established in the Library Inspector (be sure to watch this episode if you don't know what that is), or leaving the files in place.
Finally, Steve caps it off by showing us one additional new feature: filtering by stills or videos in the Import window. Together, these 3 new features make importing your media easier and more powerful than ever.
