In this lesson, Kevin P McAuliffe talks about the basics of Multicamera editing in Media Composer, how to set it up and how to make critical changes, when the producer/director is sitting right next to you!
In our last lesson, we looked at using Pluraleyes to sync up your cameras, and many people would immediately say “Why would you show a paid option, before a free one?”, and the answer is simple. I can’t count how many times I’ve been given footage from a camera operator that either has the timecode on each camera so far out of whack, that I’m spending hours attempting to sync up the audio using my ears and the audio waveforms, or they started and stopped the camera so many times that a multicam edit is impossible. Those are what I call the worst case scenario, and that is where Pluraleyes will help you tremendously.
In this lesson, we’re going to talk about the best and medium case scenario. First, we’re going to talk about setting up your multigroup using Timecode. This is the most ideal option, and if you have a camera operator with multi-camera experience, this shouldn’t even be an issue. The second scenario is the “not-so-ideal” situation of not having timecode, and having to sync up your footage via in/out points, again, this is not ideal, but also not a deal breaker.
Then, we’re going to get in and take a look at doing the actual multicam edit, and how easy it is to make adjustments, once your first pass is done.
