In this lesson, Kevin P McAuliffe talks about your Import settings, and focuses in on a very important aspect of importing, and that is supported codecs inside of Media Composer. If you don’t set up your imports correctly, you’ll end up recompressing your footage, instead of re-wrapping it.
I just wrote an in-depth article about supported Codecs inside of Media Composer. Most people think that whenever you import anything, you’re going to have to re-compress it. What does that mean for you, the editor? Longer import times, and another compression pass on your footage, neither of which you want. Most people don’t know that Avid has a white paper all about supported codecs inside of Media Composer, and with a little bit of digging, you can easily see what codecs are supported, and which ones aren’t. Now, I’ve written an in-depth article for Pro Video Coalition that covers all of this in detail, but I thought it would also be beneficial to see how this works in a practical situation, and since Importing is the next setting we’re going to cover, it makes sense that since we’re going to talk about importing, we get the important things out of the way first. If you can wrap your head around this concept, you’ll save yourself a ton of time during importing, and get yourself editing, as quickly as possible.
