In the next lesson of Kevin P McAuliffe’s “Let’s Edit with Media Composer” tutorial series, he takes a look at the Project Selection window, and why you really need to think about what you’re doing, before choosing that project preset.
Much like in any NLE, setting up your project is critical, but it’s more critical in Media Composer. People always complain about how “rigid” Media Composer is, in how it makes you pick a format, and work with it, as opposed to being able to throw a bunch of different timelines in your project with different frame rates, and work with whatever you want. Believe it or not, there is some method behind the “madness”. You really need to think of things like this. The project type you are creating, when you first make a new project, is the format you will be finishing to. You can still add any frame size and any frame rate to that timeline, but at the end of the day, the final product will be output/exported to the frame size and frame rate you selected, way back when you created that project. This is very helpful, as this way there is no confusion as to what you are getting when you are done. In this lesson, we go through how to create a new project, and how you might just not be “handcuffed” to that original format you chose.
Now, something that’s important to keep in mind, as was announced by Avid at IBC, they will be updating Media Composer to handle 2K/4K and UHD projects, so this window will update further, but we will talk about that whenever it happens.
