Let's get back to basics and take a look at bins inside of Media Composer. This first of a multi-part lesson will give you a good running start, so you can start organizing yourself lightning quick!
Bins really are the key to your organization. Not only by knowing which ones to put footage into, but also knowing how to navigate the different views and options inside of that bin, so that you get the information you need to find what you want as quickly as possible. Media Composer, for my money, has the most in-depth bin structure of all the non-linear editing applicaitons out there today. Problem is that when you are trying to organize yourself, if you can't find the parameter you're looking for, or the setting you need to adjust, you can get caught up in “the machine”, which takes time away from you edit. In this lesson, we look at the differnt bin views (List View, Thumbnail View and Storyboard View), as well as getting in and finding the Attic. The Attic is where you're going to want to go to, if Media Composer crashes and you lose some of your edit, to just back a few autosaves, and get you back up and runnig as quickly as possible. Finally, we wrap up looking at how to customize the information columns in your bin, AND even how to get in and create your own. This lesson will give you a great grasp on how powerful the bins in Media Compser are, and will lead into the next few lessons, where we look at the bells and whistles, and some great “no so hidden” features of Bins inside of Media Composer.
