I was wanting to go in-depth with some of the cool stuff I’ve found on the NAB show floor so rather than just video a talking head and some b-roll for 10 minutes I decided to do some audio recording. First up for this is a stop by the Tangent booth. They were located in the UK pavilion. Tangent isn’t usually exhibiting at NAB but this year they have the brand new (nearly shipping) affordable color grading surface: The Tangent Ripple. At $350 this is going to be the one and only grading surface that is “affordable.” Add soon to be support in both Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Final Cut Pro X via Color Finale and you’ve got a market who needs a product like the Ripple. We’ll have a review soon here on PVC as we’ve looked at other Tangent surfaces before.
I messed around with it at several booths for quite awhile and it’s a great product. While plastic it doesn’t feel as plastic as the nearly decade old Wave. It’s light but not so light is scoots around the desk. It’s a great size to have a keyboard near. I think they are going to sell a ton of these things.
The interview with Chris Rose (who is in product engineering) goes into a lot of detail about the mechanical and construction of the Ripple, the idea behind a panel of this size and how they brought it to market, the Tangent iPad app and how it can compliment the Ripple and a few other Tangent related things. I hope the audio format allows for more detail we wouldn’t have gotten into with video.
