After waiting many months after the initial announcement in October 2015, it is now clear that Google was waiting specifically for the opening day of NAB to release its service of on-demand radio via its Play Music, an app already installed on most Android devices. Producers who had previously submitted our shows received a message today to congratulate us at the opening of the service. The message was signed by two Google Play Music product managers. I received the message regarding my CapicúaFM show.
The two product managers thanked us for adding our shows to Google Play Music via their portal, and said that starting today, such shows on Google Play Music in the US and Canada will begin rolling out on Android and be available on the web. They further cautioned that the rollout on Android devices will be gradual, so users may not see all shows on the Google Play Music app immediately.
I am particular excited since before now, the Android platform has lacked a default solution for said programs. For several years, the Apple iOS platform has included the free Apple Podcasts app. There are benefits for beginners to the distribution channel to have a default app on each mobile platform (to avoid having to download an app just to listen or subscribe), just as there are benefits for users who are subscribed to many such shows to use a professional app like Pocket Casts (my current favorite), which is available for Android, iOS, and Windows Media.
