One of the promises of the Agile BImovement is data analysis outside an enterprise data warehouse, which has the obvious benefit of time and cost savings. While those benefits are true, they divert attention from a bigger prize to be had with Agile BI: moving from waterfall development to iterative development. Let me tell you a war story.

Responding yesterday to Colin White’sIs an Enterprise Data Warehouse Still Required for Business Intelligence?, Curt Monash reiterateshis advice that:

At conventional enterprises … Manage some of your data to enterprise data warehouse standards, but not all of it. Specifically, your highest-value data should be in something that looks like a classic enterprise data warehouse, and your lower-value data shouldn’t.
