Part 2 (2 of 5) ~Mark Davey Marketing Technologist/WTF
A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.
Picture a world where things just work. A place where content canimbibeyou with the knowledge you need. Aspace-timecontinuum when information gets structured, mashed up, packaged and combined in such a simplistic way you never noticed how…. hold that thought.
The Tao (way) of Digital Asset Management is simple, no really it is simple (ingest), anecessity, not dull. An internal void filled with infinite possibilities (workflow). Naming is the origin of all particular things (ontology) the Tao of DAM (potentialities). A DAM Koan, n’est–cepas?
In the Kung Fu clip the master begins to teach the boy to hear and see without using his mind. He teaches the student to understand what awareness is and the power it holds. Digital Asset Management is the way, the way to hold all things (content, images, video, and documents) and the ability to effectively repurpose those things simply and with the correct metadata. Once an asset holds the value of the Tao we can use the information to empower our knowledge and awareness.
I hear ya’. This guy has been smoking way too much of the green stuff or drunk on thecool aid. But, hold up, think about this. Today 1.6 billion plus people are wired, yet analysts are predicting 4 billion of us will be by 2014. The largest percentage of this will be through mobile. We are seeing the first moves ofAugmented Reality and the deeper iterations based onArticulated Naturality Web. None of us has yet captured the essence of setting our data free from the silos. Our thought processes are still wrapped around a Web1.0 world. However, with web2.0 technologies bringing us closer to the master data, the sense of knowledge, once we accept the mindset, will make us ready for the semantic web. Here everything changes. Everything!
The biggest challenge is getting the fundamentals right. This means we have to understand where our ‘stuff’ is. How we cantag/keyword/metadata it for increased relevance? How we can re-purpose products and services for improvedcontextand set it free so everyone can engage with it, mash it up and embed it into internal and external hubs? It takes creative minds, the will to acknowledge everything is changing and the power brokers in organisations to drive, manage and finance it. And the investment won’t all fall neatly onto a balance sheet. The intangible asset has yet to have a currency defined.
An interesting movement in this space was recently demonstrated byQwiki , who recently won the Techcrunch Disrupt Cup.
Qwiki climbed above the competition by offering a new way to consume information: text, audio, video, and images melded together in a seamless interface, generating a dynamic movie of whatever you search for. It really does appear like something from the future and it’s only going to get better. Techcrunch
Another great example of innovation in the space of repackaging information in a format that enables us to digest and turn information into knowledge is theFlipboard for the Ipad This and other examples will only improve over time, increasing our expectations of what this type of technology can and will actually do to enhance our understanding of the potential.
For some time now on this blog we have been playing with semantic linked data tools likeZemanta, Apture andOpencalais to name but a few, allowing the user to drill-down into richer media for deeper knowledge. Others also pave the way to the world oflinked data/semantic web

So the Tao of DAM, in a rapidly iterating world, is learning to handle the data and the truth. Truth that will set us all free.
Amen DAM brothers and sisters.
