Currently in beta, Set Scouter is a new service that aims to make the location hunting process much easier by connecting filmmakers directly with property owners who are actively looking to rent places for production use.
The process of finding the right location and negotiating the price and usage can be tedious and costly, especially for independent filmmakers who might not have the budget to employ a dedicated scout. Set Scouter can put you in contact with people who already know what to expect when a crew comes to their house, and already know the price they want to charge. Since the company is based in Toronto, there’s a much larger selection of properties in that area than anywhere else at the moment, but this should change whenever they come out of beta. I spent some time browsing the site and the functionality of a great service really seems to be there. If they can spread the word and get a broader spread of cities with available properties, I think they’ve got a great idea on their hands here. The Airbnb of location scouting?
