MoMo – the Mobile Motion Film Festival – is just that: the first Swiss Film Festival for Mobile motion movies. It is exclusively for films shot on mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, GoPro or webcams.
MoMo takes place on 30th May and will be held simultaneously in Kino Arthouse Uto (Zurich) and Canada Water Culture Space (London). The event can also be followed via live stream from the MoMo website.The official selection for the festival is already chosen, but the jury had a hard time to select the list from a total of 235 films from 48 countries.

With 41 submissions the United Kingdom is on top, followed by the USA with 31, followed by Denmark, Germany , Spain, France , Canada and India. But the organizers of the event could not hide their excitment over the presence of films from places as far away as Nepal, Belarus, Guam and South Korea.
All the selected films will be screened at Mobile Motion Film Festival 2015 and the best film of each category will be awarded by the jury. The panel of judges will then evaluate each movie individually to determine the winners in the categories: “Best Film International“, “Best Swiss Film“, “Young Talent” and “Special Mention“. During the Award Night on May 30, the “Audience Choice Award” will be selected.
The jury are: Pierre Monnard (Swiss director, “Recycling Lily”), Virginia Hey (Australian actress, “Mad Max,” “James Bond” “Farscape”), Rebecca Panian (Swiss director, “At the end of life”), Marcus Markou (British filmmaker, “Papadopoulos & Sons”), Si Horrocks (British filmmaker “Third Contact”, “Kosmos”) and Martin Zimper (Swiss, Head of the academic programme Cast/ Audiovisual Media at Zurich University of Arts)
The enormous enthusiasm of filmmakers from around the world has touched and encouraged the organizers of the festival, as they became aware that many of the participants are making a film on a mobile device for the first time or even shooting their first film ever. Next year’s edition is already being prepared.
One interesting aspect of this festival is that it was funded through a Kickstarter campaign. Yes, organizers arranged 131 backers which pledged £5,627 (around $8,800) to help bring this project to life. According to one of the founders of the project, Andrea Holle, “2014 was been a very exciting and important year for us. In June we finished developing the concept of the festival. In August, we went live with our website. In October, we ran an unforgettable crowdfunding campaign. In November, we started calling for entries and, in December, we confirmed the location and date of the first Mobile Motion Film Festival in HISTORY.”
Andrea Holle says that “digital filmmaking technology gets cheaper every year, opening opportunities for budding auteurs with limited resources. Filmmaking tools that are cheap, simple and widely available (coupled with the collective knowledge of the internet) are driving fresh, unique and open approaches to cinema. We are aiming to be at the forefront of this new wave of filmmakers with our new platform – the Mobile Motion Film Festival. With MoMo we want to create a festival which provides a level playing field for filmmakers, where talent, creativity and hard work counts more than budget and industry connections. Believing that anybody with a thought-provoking concept or a touching story can make a great film, the festival will showcase new talent using a tool so simple and readily available that it’s often overlooked: the mobile phone.”
