On April 1st, 2013, I published an article called How to pick your ideal HDMI or HD-SDI interface for WireCast (Pro). The article was based upon facts received after several sessions of detailed emails exchanged with the covered manufacturers (Blackmagic, Matrox, and Telestream). Yesterday (April 15th, 2013) I received an amendment from Telestream which drastically changes one line of the comparison chart, as well as changing my final conclusions. Telestream now corrects its prior statement and clarifies that with the current version of WireCast, there is unfortunately no waveform monitor with any of the listed professional input devices.

How to use an external waveform monitor with WireCast in the meantime
Since currently there is no HD-SDI output of the program signal from WireCast (Pro), the only way I know to add an external waveform monitor is to connect it upstream of WireCast, with individual access to each HD-SDI source. The waveform monitor could be a standalone instrument, a box which later feeds an HD video monitor, or an HD video monitor with built-in waveform monitor. With of any of those, this will require an upstream HD-SDI selector or matrix. In the case of either of the Matrox cards covered in the article, the best choice would be a matrix like a 4×4, in order to arrange permanent feeds to the card’s input, and a selectable signal to the waveform monitor’s input. If the DeckLink Quad is used, a simpler selector (i.e. not necessarily a matrix) may be used since (as currently configured with WireCast), the DeckLink Quad’s output connectors act as loop throughs of the inputs. Any of these options will represent a substantial additional cost to a system, which is why ahead you’ll see my Message to Telestream.
Message to Telestream
Telestream, please restore software waveform monitor capabilities to WireCast, and make it work with any of the professional HD-SDI input solutions, or any other type of input source. This is the best tool to match cameras.
