Tokina 50-135mm T2.9 mk II Cine Zoom: lighter, more compact and cheaper

With a much smaller footprint than the old 50-135mm lens, the new Tokina 50-135mm T2.9 mk II Cine Zoom Lens features rebuilt mechanics, a smaller diameter, 95mm against 114mm on the 50-135 T3 that, says Tokina, was “ a very popular lens for news and various applications and run-and-gun”.

The new reference is everything you expect fo find in a cinema lens. Offering high resolution that “will certainly resolve exceeding 4K” the lens comes with an all metal housing, features “focus, iris and zoom standard cinema gears” and has a 300 degree focus rotation. Interesting for those who need to change between cameras is that the mount can be changed from PL or EF to Micro Four Thirds or even Nikon mount.

The new lens is not just smaller it is also lighter in price, as it will cost less than the older version, at $3500, and will be available in October 2019. With the new lens Tokina hopes to convince filmmakers to choose their Cinema solution, as the company now has – or will have – this 50-135mm T2.9 mk II Cine Zoom Lens and the 11 to 20 T 2.9. launched last year.  The two lenses have gears in the same position, offering a seamless change between lenses, a feature essential for filmmakers. The lens is designed for the Super 35 format but Tokina manufactures an 1.6x expander that makes it a VistaVision full frame, if needed.
